what is a good book on texas holdem?
September 22nd, 2008
I've been looking for a good book on texas holdem, mainly to find the percentages on hands. Anyone got any ideas?
Not a book as such but probably more productive for you is a piece of software called 'World Class Poker'.
I'll paste the review below - you can get it from Amazon:
World Class Poker - Learn Online Poker From The Best
Don't just learn how to play online poker. Learn what to play, when to play, where and why. With the World Series of Poker 2006 just finished, poker players need to learn how to play better if they're to protect their bankroll.
The saying goes that Texas Hold'em, whether that be land-based or online poker, takes minutes to learn but a lifetime to master. It's certainly true that most people can pick up the game very, very quickly but almost all of them play badly - giving decent players an easy ride at the poker tables.
Online poker players who want to improve their game and start to make serious money at the game usually search the net for advice. Whilst most of these tips are useful, they mostly repeat the same basic information and can only take you so far. To really get your game into top gear you will usually need the help of someone who already knows and plays the game at the highest level and, unless you can afford to pay for the teachings of an WSOP champion who is prepared to share their knowledge, you're going to be out of luck.
This is where a new piece of software for your PC or Mac becomes a vital tool for all online poker players. World Class Poker with TJ Cloutier is a PC/mac-based poker game/tutorial. If you so wish, you can simply play the game as a standard poker game and even take your chances in the World Series of Poker. However, where the software really scores is that it's also a tutorial - a guide to improving your play.
The package contains two CD's filled with in-game expert play recommendations, loads of scenario tips, and numerous quiz questions with thoroughly explained answers, all from the world's top-winning poker player, TJ Cloutier. The replay mode allows you to see all your opponents' hole cards as well as each person's probability to make his or her hand. Includes no limit, limit and satellite tournaments, heads-up play, as well as Texas Hold'em, Omaha, 7 Card Stud, and 5 Card Draw games. The most comprehensive poker strategy tutorial ever created doesn't just teach you how to play Texas Hold'em, you'll learn what to play, when, where, and why.

Depends what kind of Texas Hold'em you want to play. I've been playing for 8 years and the following books have aided my success greatly:
If you want to play Limit Poker, I recommend:
Lee Jones "Winning Low Limit Holdem, 3rd edition"
If you want to play No Limit Poker (cash game), I recommend:
Doyle Brunson "Super System"
If you want to play Tournament Poker, I recommend:
Dan Harrington "Harrington on Holdem, Vol I & II"
The percentages on hands won't help you win at hold'em. Everyone knows the percentages, and learning them is a must…but there's not really a need for a book just for that. Poker is a people game played with cards, not a card game played with people. Hope that made sense. Good luck.

I like David Sklansky's poker books. Sklansky is a well respected poker author and pro poker player. I would recommend the following books:
Hold'em Poker
http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=2181&sourceid=41623806&bfpid=1880685086&bfmtype=book
This is considered to be the first definitive book on Hold'em written by a pro. I personally feel it helped me a lot and made me a better poker player. This has the exclusive Sklansky Hand Ranking chart.
The Theory of Poker
http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=2181&sourceid=41623806&bfpid=1880685000&bfmtype=book
This book has topics such as pot odds, bluffing & semi-bluffing, the free card, Slowplaying, and a lot more. This is a great book that touches on subjects that will definitely help you play good poker.
Tournament Poker for Advanced Players
http://service.bfast.com/bfast/click?bfmid=2181&sourceid=41623806&bfpid=1880685280&bfmtype=book
This book is highly recommended if you want to be a great tournament player. I have gained a lot of knowledge on how to play differently in a tournament when compared to a cash game. It covers topics like position play, all-in consideration, the gap concept, and how chips change value. This book has helped me to become a better tournament player.
